Lead project methanization
Catalytic and microbial methanation as a basis for the development of sustainable energy storage systems
The first main topic deals with the investigation of fundamental processes of methanation, i.e. the conversion of hydrogen into methane with the aid of CO2. One methodological approach is bacterial underground methanation in porous storage media, which will be reproduced here with the aid of novel microfluidic systems and systematically investigated both by modeling and experimentally. Catalytic methanation in tubular reactors is the second methodological approach. In particular, novel processes for the production of tailored, reactive surfaces using ultrashort pulse lasers are to be used here for the first time and systematically investigated with regard to possible efficiency increases.
